Spanish colonist Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón brought enslaved Africans to the short-lived settlement of San Miguel de Gualdape, probably on the coast of what is now Georgia or South Carolina. In the autumn of 1526, enslaved people rebelled and escaped amid disease, hunger and conflict in the colony. It is the earliest known revolt by enslaved Africans in the territory that became the United States.
