Virginia enacted "partus sequitur ventrem", declaring that a child’s status followed the condition of the mother. Children born to enslaved women were therefore enslaved regardless of the father’s identity, allowing white enslavers to profit from births produced through coercion and sexual violence. The statute converted Black women’s reproductive capacity into inheritable property.
