On November 23, 1733, enslaved Akwamu people seized the fort at Coral Bay on the Danish island of St. John and controlled much of the island for months. Danish forces, aided by French troops from Martinique, defeated the rebellion in 1734. Many rebels died by combat, execution or suicide rather than return to bondage.
