Beginning on November 29, 1781, the crew of the British slave ship Zong threw more than 130 captive Africans into the Atlantic and claimed that water shortages made the killings necessary. The ship’s owners then sought insurance compensation for the murdered people as lost cargo. The resulting litigation, *Gregson v. Gilbert*, treated the dispute principally as an insurance matter rather than murder.
