From July 23–27, 1900, a confrontation involving Black laborer Robert Charles and New Orleans police escalated into mob attacks on the city’s Black population. Charles killed several officers before police killed him. White mobs murdered Black residents who had no connection to him, assaulted others and destroyed property while authorities failed to provide protection.
