German colonial forces waged a war of extermination in present-day Namibia after Ovaherero resistance began in January 1904. General Lothar von Trotha issued an extermination order; people were driven into the Omaheke desert, denied water, confined in camps and subjected to forced labor. Tens of thousands of Ovaherero and Nama died. Samuel Maharero and Hendrik Witbooi led resistance. Germany now recognizes the campaign as genocide.
