From August 14–16, 1908, white mobs in Springfield, Illinois, attacked Black neighborhoods after authorities moved two Black prisoners away from a threatened lynching. Scott Burton and William Donnegan were lynched, homes and businesses were destroyed, and thousands fled. The violence helped prompt formation of the NAACP in 1909.
