In May 1912, members of the Partido Independiente de Color protested a law banning their Black political party. Cuban government forces and white militias killed thousands of Afro-Cubans, especially in Oriente; estimates commonly range from 3,000 to 6,000. Party leaders Evaristo Estenoz and Pedro Ivonet were killed. U.S. forces landed during the crisis but did not protect the movement.
