The Natives Land Act took effect on June 19, 1913, restricting African land ownership and tenancy to designated reserves comprising only a small fraction of South Africa. It dispossessed Black farmers, strengthened white land control and forced Africans into wage labor. Sol Plaatje documented its immediate devastation.
