U.S. Marines occupied Haiti beginning July 28, 1915. American officials rewrote financial and constitutional arrangements, imposed forced road labor and used violence against rural resistance. Cacos leader Charlemagne Péralte was killed in 1919, and U.S. forces displayed a photograph of his corpse to intimidate Haitians. Thousands died during resistance and repression.
