On July 2–3, 1917, white workers and mobs attacked Black residents of East St. Louis, Illinois, amid labor competition and racist agitation. The official death count was 39 Black people and nine white people, but witnesses estimated that as many as 100 or more Black residents were killed. Thousands were displaced and large sections of Black neighborhoods burned.
