On December 1, 1944, French forces opened fire on West African veterans at the Thiaroye camp near Dakar after the soldiers demanded back pay and equal treatment following service and German captivity. France long reported 35 deaths, while later estimates and archival disputes suggest a higher toll. The men were members of the *Tirailleurs Sénégalais* from several colonies.
