Virginia executed seven Black men—Francis DeSales Grayson, Booker T. Millner, Howard Lee Hairston, James Luther Hairston, Frank Hairston Jr., John Clabon Taylor and Joe Henry Hampton—on February 2 and 5, 1951, after convictions for raping a white woman. They received death sentences in trials before all-white juries while white men convicted of rape were almost never executed. Virginia granted posthumous pardons in 2021.
