On August 28, 1955, Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam abducted, tortured and murdered 14-year-old Emmett Till in Mississippi after Carolyn Bryant accused him of offending her at a store. An all-white jury acquitted the killers, who later admitted the murder in a paid magazine interview. Till’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, insisted on an open-casket funeral that exposed the brutality nationally.
