On September 4, 1957, Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus used the National Guard to block nine Black students—Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls, Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray, Thelma Mothershed and Melba Pattillo—from Central High School. White mobs assaulted and threatened them. President Dwight Eisenhower eventually federalized the Guard and sent the 101st Airborne to enforce entry.
