Between 1964 and 1970, Halifax razed and relocated Africville, a historic Black Nova Scotian community that the city had long denied water, sewage, roads and other basic services while placing undesirable facilities nearby. Residents and possessions were at times moved in city garbage trucks; the Seaview United Baptist Church was demolished in 1967. The last resident, Aaron “Pa” Carvery, left in 1970, while Eddie Carvery later maintained a decades-long protest on the site. Halifax formally apologized in 2010.
