On December 16, 1972, Portuguese commandos and secret-police personnel killed civilians in and around Wiriyamu, Mozambique, during Operation Marosca. Victims included women and children; published estimates range from roughly 150 to around 400 across several villages. Missionaries helped expose the atrocity, and Portuguese prime minister António Costa formally apologized in 2022.
