On June 16, 1976, South African police fired on students protesting compulsory Afrikaans instruction and apartheid education in Soweto. Police killed 13-year-old Hector Pieterson and 15-year-old Hastings Ndlovu among the first victims; photographer Sam Nzima’s image of Mbuyisa Makhubo carrying Pieterson, with Antoinette Sithole beside them, traveled worldwide. Official figures eventually listed 176 deaths, while other estimates are substantially higher.
