On September 12, 1977, Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko died after security police beat him during detention in Port Elizabeth and transported him, naked and critically injured, more than 1,000 kilometres to Pretoria. Officials initially lied about the cause. Five former officers later sought amnesty from South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which was denied; no one was convicted of his killing.
