On May 13, 1985, Philadelphia police dropped an explosive on the home of MOVE, a Black liberation and back-to-nature organization, after an armed standoff. The bombing and ensuing fire killed eleven people, including founder John Africa and five children, and destroyed 61 homes. A city commission later called the decision to bomb the occupied rowhouse “unconscionable”; no official faced criminal conviction.
