Easter Egg: Lot #1989 references the racially motivated murder of 16-year-old Black teenager Yusuf Hawkins on August 23, 1989. The night before, a local white teenager, Keith Mondello, was rebuffed by his ex-girlfriend, Gina Feliciano. Rumors spread that Feliciano was inviting Black and Hispanic boys to a party in the neighborhood. In response, Mondello assembled a group of 10 to 30 white youths to "defend" the neighborhood. Hawkins and his friends, unaware of the waiting mob, walked past the group, which was armed with baseball bats. The mob surrounded them, hurled racial slurs, and beat them. Hawkins was ambushed and fatally shot by a white mob in the predominantly Italian-American neighborhood of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, leading to city-wide protests and exposing deep racial tensions.
